Merino wool Christmas gifts: how to choose a gift that actually gets worn
A good Christmas gift is one that gets worn all winter, not one that waits in the wardrobe. A merino wool knit is exactly that kind of gift: warm, soft even on bare skin and made to last for years. This guide shows you how to choose a merino gift that fits, even when you don't know the person's size.
Order made-to-order clothing by 6 December; items in stock still arrive in time if you order by 16 December.
Why merino wool makes a good gift
A gift that is worn every day reminds the person of you every time they put it on. Merino wool is ideal for this. Merino fibre is very fine, usually around 15–24 microns, which is why a merino hat feels soft on the forehead and a scarf feels soft on a bare neck.
Wool keeps you warm even in damp weather and it breathes, so a knit works outdoors in the cold as well as in a warm room. Wool stays fresh for a long time and needs washing only rarely. A well-kept merino knit lasts for years, so the gift doesn't disappear after the first winter. Read more on our page Why merino wool?
Safe choices when you don't know the size
If you don't know the person's size, choose an accessory. A hat almost always fits, because the stretchy knit shapes itself to the head. The Soonik beanie with its double cuff covers the ears and suits women and men alike. A scarf has no size at all, so you can't go wrong with the Soonik scarf or the fluffy bubble-knit Mummu scarf.
Merino socks also make a lovely gift. They come in one size and 13 colours, soft and warm, the kind you wear at home every evening. Socks suit everyone, from mum and dad to grandma or a friend, and a few pairs in different colours make a nice gift bundle.
Merino mittens and Mummu mittens get used every day in a northern winter. If you are unsure about the size, go one up, because a mitten should be roomy to keep the hand warm. Wrist warmers keep the wrists warm under a coat sleeve and in a chilly office, and the Tuck headband keeps the ears warm and leaves the hair in place. For the whole family there is the Merino throw, around the shoulders on a cool evening or as a blanket on the sofa.
Gift ideas by price
For under €40 you can give Merino socks, Tuck wrist warmers, a Tuck headband or Soonik wrist warmers. They make good small gifts for a colleague, a teacher or a friend. Between €40 and €70 you'll find a hat, mittens or a scarf, such as the Soonik beanie, Merino mittens or the Mummu scarf. For a bigger gift, choose the Muhu pattern scarf, a matching hat and scarf, a sweater or the Merino throw.
Gifts for her
A warm matching set makes a lovely gift for her. The Mummu beanie, Mummu scarf, Mummu wrist warmers and Mummu mittens share the same fluffy bubble knit, so they go together and can be given as a pair or a full set. For a simpler style, the Soonik beanie, Soonik scarf and Soonik wrist warmers match in the same way. From 1 November to 16 December you save 10% when you buy two accessories and 15% when you buy three. For a bigger gift, browse women's knitwear, with sweaters, cardigans and dresses.
Gifts for him
A simple, timeless knit that can be worn every day makes a good gift for a man. The Muhu pattern scarf is inspired by the eight-pointed stars of the folk patterns of Muhu, an Estonian island, and goes with an everyday jacket as well as a smarter coat. The Soonik beanie and Soonik scarf are a classic pair that never goes out of style. Find more ideas in men's knitwear.
Gifts for someone who'd like anything
If the gift is for a father, mother, grandmother or a friend whose taste you don't know well, choose something everyone uses. Warm Merino socks are lovely at home and in a cool bedroom, and a soft Merino throw suits any home. These are gifts that get used every evening.
How to choose the size when giving a sweater
Many ME knit designs have a relaxed fit, so they suit different body shapes. Every clothing page has a size chart in centimetres: length, width and sleeve. The surest way is to take the person's favourite sweater, lay it flat on a table and measure the width across the chest just below the armholes and the length from shoulder to hem. Compare those numbers with the chart.
If in doubt, write to us at info.meknit@gmail.com and we'll help you choose. Unworn items with their tags can be returned within 14 days of delivery. Keep in mind that if you buy early, this period may end before Christmas. See all sweaters and jumpers.
When to order so the gift arrives before Christmas
Items in stock leave us within one or two working days, so in Estonia they reach the parcel locker in time even if you order as late as 16 December. The product page shows whether an item is in stock. For a made-to-order hat, scarf or mittens, order by 13 December, and for made-to-order clothing or a throw, by 6 December.
Parcels to Latvia, Lithuania and Finland take a couple of days longer. The last order dates there are 14 December for items in stock, 9 December for accessories and 2 December for clothing.
